Breaking Taboos, Flowing Forward: 10 years of Menstrual Hygiene Day

All over the world, women and girls are marginalised, belittled and prevented from reaching their full potential because of their periods. With over 600 million menstruating persons lacking access to information, facilities, and products, this isn't just an isolated issue, but a systemic one. Menstruation is often a taboo subject and many girls and women are isolated during their periods and prevented from participating in normal life. As a result, women and girls do not have equal access to education or social, political and economic participation and are also exposed to particular health risks.

"Who cares?" is the theme of re:publica 2024, striking at the core of the matter. Because who cares about menstruation? Today we have the opportunity to give a voice to this neglected topic with committed women and champions for the cause, who showcase how digital approaches are able to change social norms and promote an understanding of menstruation as a natural part of life. Join us on the 10th anniversary of International Menstrual Hygiene Day and learn how the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is working with partners to break the taboo around menstruation.
